Pan-democratic lawmakers, who are to meet Beijing leader Zhang Dejiang on Wednesday, said they will put forward two demands – removing CY Leung as Chief Executive and restarting political reform as soon as possible.
Four lawmakers from the pan-democratic camp will meet the head of the National Peoples Congress Standing Committee at a cocktail reception, in what is seen as an ice-breaking moment between Beijing and the camp.
Zhang is the top most central leader to visit Hong Kong after Occupy protests calling for universal suffrage rocked Hong Kong in 2014.
In a joint statement, signed by the 22 pan-democratic lawmakers, they said they have omitted the one-way permit issue from a list of their demands.
The permit system allows 150 mainlanders to move to Hong Kong per day – but mainland authorities issue those permits. For years, many have demanded that the SAR should have control instead.
The pan-democratic camp's convenor, Cyd Ho, said they want to focus just the two issues. “If you want peace and harmony in Hong Kong, we have to tackle the real problem existing in the administration,” she said,
Neo-Democrat Gary Fan is the only lawmaker from the pan-democratic camp who did not sign the statement.
