Some restaurants in Wan Chai say the extensive security curbs enforced to protect state leader Zhang Dejiang has taken a toll on their business.
Police’s maximum security measures have turned the area into a labyrinth of metal fences and two-metre-high plastic barriers filled with water.
A restaurant manager said business has halved, and another restaurant owner said he expects to lose at least HK$15,000.
People working in offices and government buildings within the security zone also felt the disturbance.
One woman told RTHK that it takes her double the usual time to go to work, and another described the security measures as “a bit of an overkill”.
But not everybody is annoyed. “I’m used to this. It makes no difference to me,” another man said. “We’re part of China. We need to protect our leaders.”
