Two prominent student leaders were charged on Tuesday with obstructing police officers during a protest outside the central government’s liaison office a year ago.

Joshua Wong Chi-fung, convenor of Scholarism, together with Federation of Students secretary general Nathan Law Kwun-chung, both reported to the Western Police Station on Tuesday afternoon.

Inside the station, Wong was told he faces two charges of obstructing police officers in carrying out their duty. Law faces one charge.

They will both appear at Eastern Court on Friday.

The protest took place on June 11 last year and more than 20 people took part. League of Social Democrats vice-chairman Raphael Wong Ho-ming and People Power lawmaker Albert Chan Wai-yip, who also took part in the protest, have already been charged with obstructing police officers.

The white paper on the administration of Hong Kong, released in June, took many in the city by surprise as there was no hint beforehand that Beijing would produce such a document.

The document stressed the central government’s “comprehensive jurisdiction” over Hong Kong and referred to judges as “administrators” who had to be “patriotic” in carrying out their job.

It raised fears over the principle of the rule of law, and over whether Beijing may be seeking to change promises it made in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.
