A group of postgraduates has lodged a formal complaint with the University of Hong Kong, demanding it stop an on-going election for a student seat in its governing body – the University of Hong Kong Council.
The postgraduates have until the end of this week to decide which of the two candidates they want in the council, by casting their votes online.
But many are unhappy that both contenders, Anabella Mak and Zhu Ke, have refused to attend an on-campus forum. The previous post-graduate representative, Aloysius Wilfred Raj Arokiaraj, resigned in protest in July against the way the council handled the filling of the post of a pro-vice-chancellor. It ultimately decided not to appoint the only candidate recommended for the post, liberal scholar and former law dean, Johannes Chan.
Speaking on RTHK's Hong Kong Today programme, a master’s student in human rights law at the university, Johnson Yeung, said the election was against democratic principles and university regulations because it requires voters to register their identities.
"This online voting, we need to log in to our own accounts with our own identity to vote. This is violating the principle of secret ballot in the university’s election regulations", Yeung said.
