Tommy Cheung
A student representative in the Chinese University of Hong Kong's senate, Tommy Cheung, said on Tuesday that the institution's next governing council chairman must be acceptable to different stakeholders and be willing to uphold the school's autonomy.
Cheung’s comments came before the current chairman, Vincent Cheng, chairs the last meeting of the council on Tuesday afternoon. Cheng’s term expires on Friday.
Cheung, who was the president of the university's student union last year, said he hoped Cheng will secure another term instead of seeing the widely tipped candidate, former City University council chairman Norman Leung, take up the post.
But Cheung said if someone else takes up the post, the person must tell the public whether he or she supports reforming the composition of the governing councils at various universities, something students from some universities have demanded.
The appointments are made by the chief executive and the recent ones by CY Leung to other universities have caused controversies.
Cheung stressed he was not targetting all the appointments by CY Leung. But he pointed out there were no controversies when previous chief executives appointed people.
CY Leung’s recent appointment of anti-Occupy protest figures Maggie Chan and Junius Ho to Lingnan University's governing council, caused controversy because of opposition from some students at the school and concerned members of the public.
