Horace Hung speaks to RTHK's Priscilla Ng
The Student Union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong on Tuesday demanded to take part in a meeting of the school's governing body which is expected to discuss the appointment of a new chairman to succeed Vincent Cheng whose term in office ends on Friday.
Ahead of the meeting in Central, the man widely tipped to be named the new chairman, Norman Leung, denied that he was a supporter of the Chief Executive, CY Leung.
Norman Leung, who used to be the executive chairman of Televison Broadcasts Limited and the chairman of the the City University of Hong Kong's governing body, said institutional autonomy and academic freedom were core values of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and that they should be upheld. He is currently a member of CUHK's governing body.
However, students protesting outside the meeting said this was inadequate because he did not specify he would personally work to safeguard academic freedom and autonomy at CUHK.
One of the protesters, the vice president of CUHK's student union Horace Hung, said it was important for them to be able to express their views, in particular their concerns about academic freedom and the autonomy of the university.
