Ronny Tong
The convenor of the think-tank Path of Democracy, Ronny Tong, says he is puzzled by comments made by the Chief Secretary Carrie Lam on the lead contaminated water scandal.
Speaking in Legco on Friday, Lam criticised pan-dem lawmakers for politicising the issue - after they again attempted to launch a Legco probe into the affair. She said they had no right to discredit civil servants working hard to rectify the problem.
Earlier this month, Lam admitted there had been inadequacies which resulted in tap water at some housing estates, schools and kindergartens becoming tainted with lead.
Speaking on RTHK’s News Wrap programme, Tong said Lam's comments were out of character.
“I am surpised by Carrie Lam’s attitude,” he said. “ In the past she has exhibited quite reasonable constraint in dealing with Legco members on various issues. But why is it, on this particular issue she appears to be so incensed and so annoyed by any question raised by Legco? I find it difficult to understand.”
Tong said the government had already admitted there was a problem, and that the government should be working with Legco to make sure it doesn’t happen again in future.
