Work-life what? Hongkongers put in the longest overtime hours in Asia

By Coconuts Hong Kong December 9, 2015 / 10:48 HKT
It may come as no surprise as you wake up with your face glued to your desk with dribble this morning, but it’s now official – Hongkongers work the longest overtime hours in Asia.
According to a new survey by office providers Regus, almost a third of Hongkongers work eight hours of overtime every week, while 14 percent claim to put in around 15 extra hours each week – just short of two full working days for those too tired to do maths.
A further 20 percent work four to six hours extra, and 19 percent six to eight hours extra a week, with both these categories outstripping the overtime worked in Singapore, South Korea, Japan and mainland China.
However, the 19 percent of Hongkongers who say they only do around two to four hours overtime a week are more or less on a par with their counterparts in other Asian countries.
The survey was conducted via online interviews with 44,000 business people from 100 counties between December 2014 and January this year. A total of 349 people working in Hong Kong were questioned.
There probably would have been more Hong Kong respondents if we weren’t all so busy searching for that elusive work-life balance.
