Bubble tea-loving Hongkongers clearly don’t mind chunks in their drinks, but segments of kitchen sponge may be a step too far.
A woman, surnamed Fan, and her 14-year-old daughter got more than they bargained for when they visited the Häagen-Dazs store in iSquare, Tsim Sha Tsui, a fortnight ago, Apple Daily (as translated by EJI) reported on Friday.
Fan’s ice cream was the normal standard of deliciousness we’ve come to expect from Häagen-Dazs, but her daughter’s Belgian chocolate milkshake reportedly contained an unusual porous addition – a kitchen sponge.
Apple Daily said that the girl complained about the drink’s saltiness at first, before spitting out a centimetre-long chunk of green sponge. After removing the lid and rummaging around, the shocked pair reportedly discovered more sponge at the bottom of the shake. Delightful.
Out of the generosity of their hearts, the store offered the daughter a compensatory drink when Fan complained.
Unsatisfied, however, Fan contacted Häagen-Dazs customer services, who offered HKD1,000 worth of supermarket coupons instead. In addition, the company promised to send the contaminated drink for laboratory testing.
Seemingly not put off by her daughter’s no-doubt scarring experience, however, Fan reportedly played hard scoop and asked for a 50 percent discount on all Häagen-Dazs products for life.
The drama heightened further on Tuesday as Fan filed a complaint with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD), following Häagen-Dazs’ decision to refer the case to an insurance company.
After an inspection on Wednesday, the FEHD found that the standard of hygiene at the shop was satisfactory, i.e. sponges were being employed in the correct manner.
