The Secretary for Transport, Anthony Cheung, said the government will consider installing video cameras on board taxis to more effectively crack down on illegal practices.

During a Legislative Council question and answer session on Wednesday, Cheung said he was concerned about an increase in complaints against local cab services, including overcharging and refusing hire.

The minister said he will consider suggestions to install video cameras on board to facilitate prosecution against unscrupulous drivers.

"I agree we should consider it," he said. "It does involve a one on one situation when the passenger argues with the taxi driver."

Police have also already increased the number of undercover operations to tackle the problem, Cheung added.
