Hong Kong issues dengue alert after Panyu outbreak

Hong Kong health authorities have issued a medical alert after an outbreak of dengue fever in Guangzhou, am730 reported Wednesday.
Dengue fever is an acute infectious disease mainly caused by mosquitoes. It can cause high fever, headaches and bleeding.
Guangzhou confirmed this year’s first dengue case on June 29 and another 14 subsequently, mainly in Yuexiu and Panyu districts, the report said. No new cases have been reported.
In Panyu, the outbreak prompted health authorities to quarantine entire neighborhoods to prevent its spread, the report said.
Last year, Guangzhou reported nearly 1,000 dengue cases.
Panyu is a popular tourist destination for Hong Kong tourists. They have been advised to take extra precautions, the report said.
