Taking to the streets and singing from Les Miserables, hundreds of thousands of Hong Kongers protest on the anniversary of the July 1 handover of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. At the same time, 800,000 people voted on a pro-democracy Occupy Central movement referendum that Hong Kong’s chief executive should be elected by the people. Following a threatening white paper from Beijing, Hong Kongers sing, “Do You Hear the People Sing?” It seems like Beijing would have a hard time not.

Is Hong Kong the Next Tibet? | China Uncensored | 2014 Feb12
http://youtu.be/2DxUEwxrjko
Hong Kong is battling to keep its freedom. Hong Kong enjoys liberties that would be unimaginable in Mainland China. Rights like freedom of religion, freedom of speech and assembly, and they can even openly criticize the government. That’s why the Chinese Communist Party is so scared of Hong Kongers. But with Occupy Central coming up and universal suffrage in 2017, the CCP is trying its best to encroach on Hong Kong. And with a flood of Mainland Chinese settling in the area, a form of gerrymandering may be happening, where even if the right to vote is granted, elections will be undermined nevertheless. Many of the methods the Chinese regime is using are the same they’ve used in Tibet, like trying to wipe out the native language, in this case, Cantonese. So is there any hope for Hong Kong? Find out in this episode of China Uncensored!

Mainland China has been encroaching on the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong since it was returned to China after years of British Rule. The recent assault on Hong Kong teacher Lam Wai-sze by the Hong Kong Youth Care Association is just the most recent in a long string of incidents. And with tension building over controversial education programs and pro- Beijing Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, Hong Kong finds itself torn between Pro-Beijing and pro-democracy factions. What will happen when these protests finally come to a head?

Hong Kong and China-One Country, Two Systems | China Uncensored
2013Aug8 | http://youtu.be/l8f9l-JtVUw

Ever want to know how the relationship between Hong Kong and China works? Hong Kong is ruled by the People’s Republic of China under the, ‘one country, two systems’ policy. Basically it’s a part of China, but is allowed greater freedom and autonomy than the rest of Mainland China. After years as a British colony, Hong Kong was handed over to China in 1997. But for years the Chinese regime has been slowly trying to erode those liberties, especially with legislation like Article 23. And that’s led to deep divides in Hong Kong between Pro-Beijing and Pro-Democracy factions and resulted in tinderbox of political frustration that only needs a small spark to go off.
