Google’s experimental X lab has been testing drone deliveries in Australia in an initiative codenamed Project Wing, Financial Times reported Friday.
After two years of experimentation, the US technology giant has appointed Dave Vos, founder of drone control systems maker Athena Technologies, to lead a team that can take Project Wing from “research to product”, the report said.
More than 30 successful delivery flights have been made in Queensland, including a first aid kit, according to the report.
“Self-flying vehicles could open up entirely new approaches to moving things around – including options that are faster, cheaper, less wasteful, and more environmentally sensitive than the way we do things today,” Google was quoted as saying Thursday.
Australia was selected as a test site due to what Google calls “progressive” rules about the use of drones, which are more tightly controlled in other parts of the word, BBC noted.
