Hong Kong people are showing a “Nazi dog” mentality and “making a great fuss over a trifle” with their reaction to the death of a stray dog that was killed by a passing train last week.
In a commentary at the weekend, Global Times, which is published by the official People’s Daily, said all this show of concern for animal rights does not make Hong Kong more civilized than the mainland.
Other Chinese media mocked local animal lovers for making a “big fuss” about the incident which has triggered a fierce backlash against MTR Corp., Hong Kong’s rail operator.
But the influential Southern Metropolis Daily said the incident shows Hong Kong people value rule of law and respect life, and their overreaction is directed at the railway operator which has been rocked by recent scandals.
MTR came under fire for its handling of the aftermath of the incident which happened on Wednesday. Witnesses said it could have been avoided.
Subsequently, MTR issued three public statements, mostly defending its actions, but did not apologize until Friday.
A storm of protest erupted on social media, demanding a full accounting from the rail company.
On Monday, netizens ripped into the MTR when a YouTube video emerged, purporting to contradict its version of events.
