The Financial Secretary, John Tsang, says people shouldn't assume that future Chief Executives will be unaccountable, just because they do not favour the way CE candidates have been selected.

Pan democrats have said they will veto any political reform proposal that does not meet international democratic standards.

They have also said they will not accept the screening out of CE candidates.

Mr Tsang made the comments after the Basic Law Committee chairman Li Fei said some pan-democratic lawmakers had adopted a standard of universal suffrage that suits them the best.

Writing in his blog, the Financial Secretary said five million eligible voters will be able to choose the next Chief Executive if the current reform process can be implemented.

He said "one-person, one-vote" would hold every elected Chief Executive accountable to the public, and none of the future CEs would be able to favour the interest of certain sectors of the community.

The National People's Congress Standing Committee will begin a series of meetings on Monday, with Hong Kong's electoral reform being one of the items on the agenda.
