After 46 years in operation, it’s goodbye to the Wan Chai (East) Ferry Pier. The last ferry will leave at 11:00 p.m. Friday night.
A new pier, about 130 meters away, will serve the public, starting from Saturday.
The old pier is making way for a development project along the Wan Chai harbourfront, according to a Hong Kong government statement last week.
The pier began service in 1968 and in its heyday, ferries plied to and from Jordan Road, Hung Hom and Tsim Sha Tsui.
Today, only the Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui route is in operation.
The operator, The Star Ferry, once vetoed the relocation proposal.
The new pier has been criticized as being inconvenient for pedestrians and the road to it is tortuous which may potentially increase the risk for drivers.
The Queen’s Pier and Star Ferry Pier in Central were demolished several years ago.
There was fierce opposition from conservationists who wanted the landmark piers to be preserved. But they were eventually removed.
