At least 43 people have been injured, several of them critically, when a tour bus crashed on the Coquihalla Highway, 30 kilometers south of Merritt, British Columbia, Canadian media reported.

Most of the passengers were from the Greater China region, including Hong Kong and mainland China, the reports said.

Police said initial investigation showed that the bus was heading from the Okanagan Valley to the Vancouver area when it apparently hit a meridian and flipped, according to CBC News.

At least 10 passengers were seriously injured, suffering broken bones and fractures, local health officials were quoted as saying.

About five of those airlifted to the hospital were in critical condition. Other passengers had minor injuries in the form of cuts, scrapes and bruises.

The Interior Health Authority said only 43 of the 54 passengers had gone to hospital.

An official of Super Vacations, based in Richmond, B.C., confirmed the bus was on a tour organized by the company, although the bus was chartered from another operator. According to its website, Super Vacations is the largest “Chinese tour operator in North America”.

Another employee said the passengers came from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and other locations. She said the tourists had left Vancouver Aug. 25 on a trip to the Rocky Mountains and were returning to Vancouver.
