CY cries foul on uni votes

Wednesday, December 02, 2015

Chief Executive Leung Chun- ying describes as "absolutely unfair" a vote against former University of Hong Kong Council chairman Edward Leong Che- hung by the alumni association.

It passed five motions at an emergency meeting on Sunday, including one of no confidence in Leong. There was also one that Executive Council member Arthur Li Kwok-cheung is not suitable to be the next chairman.

More than 90 percent of 4,454 alumni who attended voted in favor of all five motions relating to the delayed appointment and then rejection of barrister and liberal law professor Johannes Chan Man-mun as university pro vice chancellor.

`I think it is absolutely unfair for the 90 percent of votes to go against Leong as he was the chairman for many years and was devoted to the university," Leung said before an Executive Council meeting yesterday.

He sidestepped a question on whether Li should be the council's new chairman, but there could be wider discussion on whether results of motions "such as a vote of no confidence in Leong are reasonable."

As most alumni were in favor of disclosing council business, Leung said it is up to the community to debate whether that is reasonable, pointing to it being a closed meeting with signed agreements for confidentiality. YUPINA NG
