While the speed and efficiency of Hong Kong life makes day-to-day aspects like transportation smoother, one lamentable consequence is our shortage of historical landmarks in comparison to other major cities.
As a result, we relish rare glimpses of "old" Hong Kong - like photographer Fan Ho's stunning work - and now, digital agency Verve Search's newest photo project, "Historic Hong Kong".
The project, commissioned by accomodations provider HotelClub.com, layers historical photographs of landmarks (like the original Mandarin Oriental) over their modern facades, and features sights that were designed to interest both locals and tourists.

The historical photographs span from 1870 to 1965, and range from fairly easy to distinguish, like Wyndham Street or Ladder Street, to completely unrecognisable, like Queen's Road or Tsim Sha Tsui's "diamond paved" Nathan Road.
Content strategist Matt Lindley noted that while Hong Kong "looks nothing like it did 50 or 100 years ago", "traces of the past [remain], such as the narrow alleys of Kowloon, or the New Territories villages that have been affected little by the nearby urbanisation."
Depending on the success of the campaign, Verve has tentatively said they would like to expand their project to other parts of Hong Kong.
