The government has cleared another hurdle for the HK$5.46 billion in extra funds it is seeking for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge project, with Legco’s Public Works Subcommittee provisionally endorsing the request.
The administration still has to obtain the approval of the legislature's Finance Committee, which is scheduled to debate the issue on January 8.
Officials say cost overruns mean that without the extra funding there won’t be enough money for car parks, public toilets and taxi stands at the bridge’s boundary crossing facilities.
Delays to the project mean the bridge is now expected to open by the end of 2017.
