The convenor of the University of Hong Kong Alumni Concern Group, education sector legislator Ip Kin-yuen, has urged the university to sign the Magna Charta Universitatum, to reinforce its vow to safeguard its core values, such as institutional autonomy.
The University of Oxford, the University of Tokyo and Cornell University are among the more than 800 universities globally who have already signed the charter.
The idea has been put forward by Ip in one of his four non-binding motions to be voted on during Thursday’s annual meeting of the HKU Court – the supreme advisory body of the university. Ip’s other motions call for a review of the “absolute confidentiality” rules that cover HKU Council meetings, and the governance structure of the university.
“If it is going to sign the charter as well, it would be a very good indicator,” he said. “It would also show the international community that it has such a commitment.”
