Police are offering a HK$100,000 reward in a hunt for a hit-and-run motorist whose car hit and killed a university student in Hong Kong a year ago.

The new reward notice posted on the police website over the weekend says a seven-seater white Toyota Estima, manufactured between 2006 and 2012, is now being sought by police in connection with the fatal accident.

The incident happened at about 1.50am on December 2, 2014, when Chan Yat-ming, 19, a Hong Kong Polytechnic University student was crossing Chatham Road North near the junction with Baker Street in Hung Hom. The driver left the scene after knocking down Chan, according to police.

“[The vehicle then] jumped a red light at Chatham Road North near the junction of Pak Kung Street and travelled along Ko Shan Road, Shun Yung Street, Fat Kwong Street, Pui Ching Road and Soares Avenue,” the police notice said. “It was last seen making a left turn into the westbound of Argyle Street.”

It said any member of the public who has information related to this case including the details of the vehicle or the person involved should contact them straight away.

Chan, a first-year student in health studies, died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital on December 7, 2014. He lived with his parents and younger brother in Shek Kip Mei.

A police source said officers hoped the reward could bring in more information as police were short on leads in the case. “The driver involved could face a charge of dangerous driving causing death that carries a maximum penalty of a 10-year imprisonment,” the source added.
