Hongkongers doing a bit of last minute Crimbo shopping in Causeway Bay were treated to a rather strange sight today, as three people besuited in Santa outfits abseiled down the front of Times Square's big screen and caused somewhat of a ruckus.
The Santas unfurled a large 15 by 10 metre banner, which said "[One] min 1,400 tees thrown away. Buy smart, buy less", in reference to a Greenpeace study which said that Hongkongers chuck out an average of 1,400 t-shirts every minute.
The Santas, who had scaled down from the 13th floor of Times Square at around 1pm, ended up attracting the attention of local firefighters, who set up an inflatable mattress to catch the rogue activists should they come a cropper.
One of the naughty Santas, Greenpeace campaigner Kate Lin, shared photos of her afternoon antics on Facebook, and asked friends to "accept the challenge" to buy less this holiday season.
