St John's Cathedral in Central will be holding a remembrance service at 6pm on Sunday evening, to commemorate the centenary of World War One and reflect on the millions of lives it claimed.

It was during a five-day period, 100 years ago, that a series of countries declared war on one another and so began the first world war in 1914.

It resulted in more than 16 million deaths.

Hong Kong as a British colony sent soldiers. The names of those who died are inscribed on memorials here.

The Chinese Labour Corps sent more than 90,000 men from here and the mainland, to help the British army in France and elsewhere.

Thirty diplomats have been invited along with the German Consul-General.

Reverend John Chynchen said the service would have hymns and prayers and writer Stuart Wolfendale would explain some of the history of the first world war.

He said 100 years on, the service would be a sign that while society had moved on, people still remembered the ghastliness of a war that cost the lives of a generation.
