Afternoon tea at the Peninsula is often touted as a must-have Hong Kong experience.Former triad boss Kwok Wing-hung didn’t get such a sweet deal this Sunday, however, when he was attacked by a man with a seven-inch knife. We guess it’s the company he keeps.

Obviously still on his game, Kwok managed to dodge any major blows to the body, but did suffer a cut to his eyelid, Apple Daily reports (as translated by EJI).

Not only were Kwok’s four bodyguards useless at preventing the attack, they also couldn’t catch the fiend, who apparently outran them on Middle Road. More treadmills, less scones could be the answer there, fellas.

The bulky bunch did, however, take their boss (also known as “Shanghai Tsai (Boy)”) to the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, where he had to endure a police interview – we dare say, not for the first time in his esteemed career. This clearly finished him off, as the retired gangster refused to speak to reporters later.

According to sources, Kwok is always heavily guarded, usually with at least three seven-seater vehicles, as he has recently become a target for several triad forces. The reasons for his sudden unpopularity have not been disclosed, but the rumour on the street is that he was was recently forced to leave a casino VIP room business in Macau as he had racked up too many gambling debts.

Kwok is, however, pretty well connected in the Kong. Before the chief executive election back in 2012, the press caught him having dinner with Chief Executive CY Leung’s campaign manager Fanny Law and members of the Heung Yee Kuk, an advisory body representing interests in the New Territories.

Perhaps a couple more cream teas with those guys will see him safe.
