An elderly man who joined the anti-Occupy Central protest march on Sunday threw a pack of eggs at a pan-democratic station but accidentally hit a policewoman instead. Police are still looking for the suspect.
Besides eggs, some marchers also threw plastic and glass bottles, pills and flags at the group identified with the pan-democratic group People Power, and at least two people were hospitalized, People Power member “Fast Beat” Tam Tak-chi said on Sunday.
Tam said he does not believe police will be able to arrest the attackers, who fled and hid in the crowd.
He slammed the anti-Occupy Central protesters for claiming to walk for peace but engaging in such violent actions. In fact, he said, Occupy Central will show everyone that it is a peaceful movement, he said.
Tam said he was not worried for himself but was concerned that the marchers might throw something more dangerous next time.
At least three demonstrators were arrested after tension flared up between the marchers and the People Power group near the Wan Chai fire station, Ming Pao Daily reported on Monday.
The incident happened as the marchers were passing by the People Power rallyists, who compared the pro-Beijing demonstrators to those who took part in the 1967 riots in the city.
Some of the protestors then threw various objects, including embrocation bottles and water bottles, in the direction of the People Power rallyists, Apple Daily reported.
A woman surnamed Lee was hit in the left eye by a water bottle thrown by one of the marchers. She was carrying a placard that said former Politburo member Bo Xilai was sacrificed in the power struggle within the Chinese communist party.
The man who threw eggs at the People Power group was marching along with members of the New Territories Association of Societies, but NTAS chairman Brave Chan Yung said he was not sure if he was a member of their group. The man was not among those arrested.
