Beijing’s chief representative in Hong Kong has held talks with pan-democrats on national security and the 2017 chief executive election, government broadcaster RTHK reported Monday.
The meeting with Zhang Xiaoming, head of Beijing’s Liaison Office, lasted two hours but failed to produce concrete results, lawmaker Frederick Fung of the Hong Kong Association for Democracy and People’s Livelihood was quoted as saying.
“We spent most of the time discussing national security, Occupy Central and also whether the next Hong Kong leader has to love Hong Kong and China and whether electoral reform should comply with international standards,” Fung said.
The two sides differed on national security.
However, if Beijing can leave enough room for all parties to discuss issues, it would help find consensus, Fung said.
He said the National People’s Congress has yet to decide on an election model for the 2017 chief executive election after reports that the country’s parliament had already made up its mind.
The other pan-democrats in Monday’s meeting were Charles Peter Mok, Ip Kin-yuen and Joseph Lee.
Mok said Zhang did not respond to questions about detailed arrangements for universal suffrage and was more interested in principles such as international standards.
Meanwhile, Wang Guangya, director of the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, and Li Fei, chairman of the Hong Kong Basic Law Committee, will meet lawmakers in Shenzhen on Thursday.
