The government says it will seek at least an extra HK$4.1 billion from the Legislative Council to pay for expenses incurred by delays in the construction of a rail line linking Sha Tin and Central.

The Shatin-Central link is one of a number of MTR projects that has been beset by delays and cost overruns. According to a report submitted to Legco, progress on the Tai Wai to Hung Hom section of the project has been put back by 11 months after the discovery of archaeological relics at the site of the future To Kwa Wan station.

However, the MTR is trying to make up for lost time and still hopes to open that particular section in 2019 – one year later than originally expected. The completion of the Hung Hom to Admiralty section of the link has also been delayed to 2021.
