Here’s a woman who brings a whole new meaning to the adjective “domineering”. If the chief executive’s wife is on your VIP list, no one else is allowed to be. The Post found out that Leung Chun-ying’s wife, Regina Leung Tong Ching-yee, expressly demanded to be the one and only VIP guest at any fundraisers, ceremonies and shows she attends. Her demand is well-known in high circles: a top official once received a call from an event organiser who apologised profusely that the official had to be taken off the VIP list, as “Mrs Leung had agreed to come and she wanted to be the only VIP on the list”.

Official puts on a brave face, but the strain shows

Women’s resilience was on full display at the central government offices on Wednesday – when Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Betty Fung Ching Suk-yee resurfaced in the public limelight at a large group meeting with visiting state leader Zhang Dejiang. Fung endured a marital crisis recently when her husband admitted “dealings” with a woman relative of Macau gambling mogul Stanley Ho Hung-sun. Although Fung had been back at work for some time, this marked the first occasion at which she had appeared at a public event. Just a month and a half earlier she was surrounded by journalists outside her home and seen leaving with luggage, but without a marriage ring on her hand. Although the seasoned civil servant managed to return to Hong Kong’s political core and met China’s third most senior politician, she was not caught saying anything on camera. But her distinctly emotionless face in the group picture released by the Information Services Department may have provided a clue about her state of mind.

Ladies’ first – young lawmaker gives up the hottest ticket in town

“Never offend women” – that is probably the No 1 rule in the mind of the Civic Party’s Alvin Yeung Ngok-kiu, a rising star who earlier won the by-election to enter the legislature. At the Journalists Association annual gala dinner last Friday, every guest literally screamed as the emcees announced that Yeung had won the special lucky draw – a chance to meet Korean actor Song Joong-ki in an autograph session. But soon after the young barrister received the prize, he returned to the stage. “Lots of ladies have been staring at me as I proceeded to my table from the stage,” Yeung joked. He returned the ticket for another draw and stressed that only ladies could claim the prize. That was perhaps a wise move to keep his female supporters happy. Song, leading actor in the hot dramaDescendants of the Sun, has stirred up a frenzy in Asian countries in recent months and even triggered a surge in sales of red ginseng extract, which he was seen drinking in some episodes.
