Heavy policing on Tuesday did not deter protesters from attempting to make their voices heard when state leader Zhang Dejiang arrived in Hong Kong for a three-day visit.
The League of Social Democrats (LSD) put up a banner at a construction site on the North Lantau Highway for the chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee. The black banner stated: "End to the Communist Party's dictatorship".
LSD said several of its members, including its chairman Avery Ng, were later arrested on suspicion of breaking traffic laws.
The group's vice chairman, Raphael Wong, said he was also arrested when he tried to hang two banners on a hill opposite the Tsing Ma Bridge.
Earlier in the morning, the party hung a giant yellow banner on Beacon Hill with slogans calling for true universal suffrage.
Meanwhile, three people, including new political party Demosisto’s chairman Nathan Law, were subdued by police when they staged a protest in Wan Chai as Zhang’s motorcade was passing by them on its way to his hotel next to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).
One of them was holding a placard stating: "We don’t want One Belt, One Road". Demosisto said on social media Facebook that the three of them felt that the designated protest zone where they were standing was too far for Zhang to see. Therefore they decided to protest along the route of his motorcade.
Across the road from Zhang’s hotel, at Shui On Centre on Harbour Road, police dispersed another three protesters. Derek Lam, a member of the disbanded students' group Scholarism and two others, had shouted slogans and held up placards.
Zhang arrived at Hong Kong International Airport shortly before noon. He was greeted by the Chief Executive, CY Leung, several top government officials and the head of Beijing's Liaison Office in the territory, Zhang Xiaoming.
He will deliver a keynote address at the One Belt, One Road forum at HKCEC on Wednesday.
