A young Napalese man is being hunted after he allegedly chopped off his stepmother's head and wounded another relative in Tsuen Wan early yesterday morning.
Police warned that the 21-year-old construction worker has emotional and mental problems and called on the public for information.
The suspect, Lawati Sandesh, is described as 1.8 meters tall and has a strong build. He was last seen wearing a black and red checkered shirt and dark trousers.
He allegedly repeatedly chopped his 42-year-old stepmother, Limbu Dewakl, in the kitchen of a 700-square-foot flat in Yan Oi Building, Chuen Lung Street, at about 6.15am, police said.
Reports said Limbu sustained multiple wounds to the neck enough for her head to get lopped off.
A relative of the stepmother, who lives in the same flat, dashed to the victim's aid but she too was hacked. She managed to break free and ran out together with the victim's seven- year-old son to call police
She was later admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital, where she was in a stable condition last night. The boy was not injured.
The suspect's father, 44, was not at home at the time.
Officers seized two curved choppers and a fruit knife at the scene.
After the assault, dozens of officers wearing helmets and metal shields cordoned off the building and mounted a futile two-hour search for the suspect. Police said the family has no record of domestic violence.
"Our investigation will be along all lines of inquiry and the most important thing is we are urging people with information to come forward and appealing for all information," said Superintendent Eric Ho Chun-chung, Tsuen Wan assistant district commander.
"If anybody knows the whereabouts or has any information regarding the suspect, we invite you to contact us."
Police will also examine security camera footage from nearby shops.
They are still investigating the motive behind the attack and believes the suspect was unarmed when he fled the scene.
Police warned the public to be alert and to call 999 or 3661-2402 if they see a man matching the suspect's description.
It is understood the family moved to Hong Kong from Nepal in 1996.
The family lives with two female relatives in the same flat.
