Eddie Luk and Kenneth Lau Thursday, August 07, 2014 The 83-year-old victim, Chung Kin- chi, was in a serious condition in Queen Elizabeth Hospital last night after surgery to remove a pellet from the left side of his chest. The suspect, Hung Chi-keung, was still being detained last night, several hours after his arrest. Hung is a security guard whose enthusiasm for air guns stretches back more than 20 years. He is also reported to be enthusiastic about playing war games. Last night Hung was handcuffed and escorted to his flat to assist in the investigation. According to reports, the jogger, "Uncle Chung," and his wife were trotting along Sheung Lok Street near Ho Man Tin Estate when several shots were fired around 7am, one of which hit him. He was conscious when taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Pellet holes could be seen on a road sign. The housing block was at least 50 meters from where the jogger was hit. Chief Inspector Ko Yuk-yee of Kowloon City District said the shot was likely fired from Choi Man House. Officers, wearing bullet-proof vests and helmets and armed with hammers and shields, made a floor-by-floor search from the 20th floor before finding Hung in his flat on the 34th floor. About 50 officers from the Police Tactical Unit were split into s Some pellet remains were found and the road sign with several bullet marks was taken away for examination. Kowloon City District Council member Luk King-kwong said he was distributing promotion leaflets around Choi Man House when the incident happened. Luk said he heard a jogger yelling "Someone is hurt" and found Chung bleeding from his chest and his shirt covered in blood. Luk said Chung was conscious and told him that he had no idea how he was wounded. Another elderly witness who was jogging at that time said: "I felt something whiz past my hair." The witness said the pellets were fired from a flat on the higher floors. Professor Lo Kwok-keung, of the Polytechnic University's mechanical engineering department, said the air rifle may have been modified to be able to hit a target at that distance. Wilson Yee Chi-leung, the vice chairman of Hong Kong Airsoft Shooting Association, said he too believed the rifle was illegally modified. "Usually an airsoft pellet is only effective over distances of 10 to 20 meters," Yee said. "Also it could not be a pistol so it must have been a rifle." According to the Firearms and Ammunition Ordinance, an air rifle, air gun or air pistol from which any shot, bullet or missile can be discharged must not have a muzzle energy of more than two joules. |
