A video purporting to show an ugly confrontation between a cop and a motorist is making the rounds on social media, drawing a stern reaction from the Hong Kong police.
In the short clip, the motorist is shown throwing an obscenity-laden rant at the officer after being asked to move his car.
The cop let fly with a taunt, telling the driver to hit him while holding a baton, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.
Later, the video shows two women trying to separate them.
The 34-year-old driver was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct.
The incident took place in Yuen Long district on Friday but the video did not surface on Facebook until much later.
The police department said it takes police behavior seriously and will impose disciplinary action if any officer is found to have committed misconduct.
It said the concerned officer will be required to file a report on the incident.
A junior police representative said the video footage is incomplete and not enough evidence of wrongdoing by either side.
He said it is not unusual for an officer to raise a baton before a hostile suspect or a person resisting a lawful order.
The driver might have been booked under new rules on handling insults at police officers, he said.
