Ming Pao management have rejected a demand from staff to reinstate a senior editor who was sacked last week.
Workers at the Chinese-language paper have dismissed their bosses' claim that Keung Kwok-yuen was let go to save money, saying the move was more likely to have been politically-motivated and because management didn't like his editorial decisions.
Some of the paper's writers left their columns blank this week in protest at the sacking.
Ming Pao's staff association said on Wednesday it would now prepare to escalate its protest action, although it didn't provide any details.
