Activists and security guards employed by a developer were engaged in a tense standoff at a site in Ma Shi Po village near Fanling as the company moved in to take back a farmland in the northeast New Territories.

At least four activists were taken away by police after they tried to stop Henderson Land from taking back the land.

But the company fenced off parts of the village despite some noisy protests. A number of police officers were also present to control the situation. One activist has been arrested for criminal damage after he tried to cut down wire fencing.

The activists left the scene after the standoff and protests that lasted over a couple of hours. They said they will meet later to consider their future action.

The company has until the end of this year to take back the land, to be eligible for the government's land exchange programme under the area's new town development. Police arrested one activist for allegedly cutting down wire fencing.
