The Chief Executive, CY Leung, has officially appointed Norman Leung as the new chairman of the Chinese University of Hong Kong's (CUHK) governing council.

He was nominated by the council earlier this month after Vincent Cheng's term ended six months ago. Norman Leung's three-year term will start on Sunday.

The Secretary for Education, Eddie Ng, welcomed Norman Leung's appointment, saying he had vast experience in the education sector.

But his appointment has raised concerns about possible conflict of interest as he is still serving as the pro-chancellor of the City University of Hong Kong.

Some staff and students at CUHK are also worried that Norman Leung's appointment will affect the university's academic autonomy because he is seen as being close to CY Leung.
