Hundreds of fans were left disappointed on Thursday after a concert by Canto-pop star Leon Lai was cancelled two hours before it was scheduled to start because the the venue did not meet fire safety regulations.
The singer said the huge marquee erected for the show on the Central waterfront didn't meet fire safety regulations, and the Fire Services Department (FSD) said the fabric of the marquee was not up to standard.
Lai apologised to his fans for the sudden cancellation.
Senior Divisional Officer Tsang Tat-ming said the operator was informed of the requirements on March 8, and lab reports on April 12 confirmed that the fabric failed the requirements.
Asked why fans were only told of the problem hours before the concert, Tsang said the concert organisers had asked it to conduct its check at 2pm on Thursday.
Some fans turned up from the mainland for the event, only to find announcements that the concert had been cancelled.
The tickets for the concert, titled Random Love Songs 4D Live, were priced at HK$980 and HK$1,980. The venue was to hold around 4,500 fans.
Lai had originally planned to hold eight concerts at the same venue over the coming days. The status of these events was not immediately known.
