The convenor of the Path of Democracy think tank, Ronny Tong, says he has told officials in Beijing that the best way to deal with calls for independence in Hong Kong is to restart the political reform process in the territory.
Tong, who is a former member of the Civic Party and a former legislator, was in Beijing recently to hold talks with representatives of mainland think tanks and some Beijing officials.
He said he told the officials not to exert pressure on those making calls for the city's independence.
