The Hong Kong University Students’ Union on Monday urged the school's governing council to ensure effective reforms to its governance.

The council will meet on Tuesday and may discuss the terms of reference for a review panel looking at the issue.

In an open letter, the union said the panel must review how council members were appointed as the government had impinged on academic freedom.

It also called for discussions on whether Hong Kong's chief executives should automatically become the university's chancellor, saying this was a source of many governance issues.
