The MTR Corporation's Chairman, Frederick Ma, has urged the government to subsidise citizens' transportation costs, using the dividends it received from the rail operator as a majority shareholder.
He made the suggestion after the company agreed earlier this week to carry out an early review of the way fare adjustments are calculated, amid growing dissatisfaction over repeated fare rises.
Ma said his proposal is an alternative way of addressing what he called a livelihood issue.
