Chan Cheuk-ming, the owner of Sham Shui Po’s popular Pei Ho Barbecue Restaurant, has come under the spotlight for yet another act of charity and inspiring others to follow in his path.

After winning praise for serving free or cheap meals to the poor for many years, Chan — who is more commonly known as “Ming Gor” to the people in his neighborhood — has now distributed dozens of school bags to help the children of underprivileged families in his district.

The donation was made through the Society for Community Organization, a non-governmental organization that seeks to provide basic services and support for the needy, standnews.com reports.

Citing information posted by a Facebook group called Sham Shui Post on Thursday, the report said that Chan’s acts of generosity are inspiring some others to turn good Samaritans themselves.

A constant giver all his life, Chan was earlier on the receiving end of help as he was offered new shop space at below-market rent by landlord Tse Lam.

The help came when the restaurant operator could not afford to renew the lease of his old shop with increased rent.

To provide alternative space for the restaurant so that it can continue handing out free meals to people in need, Tse cleared out a backpack and school bag shop that he was running and handed it over to Chan.

According to the report, an old customer of Tse was deeply touched by the gesture and bought 100 school bags as a way of showing his support.

The customer subsequently passed the 100 school bags to Chan and asked him to help distribute the items to children in need.

Meanwhile, it is said that Tse has donated a portion of proceeds from his own shop’s clearance sale to help subsidize the relocation of Chan’s restaurant to the new premises.
