Dozens of Christians held a prayer gathering outside Beijing's liaison office on Sunday to urge the central government to stop tearing down crosses from mainland churches.

They said over 2,000 crosses have been removed in Zhejiang province since 2014.

Cardinal Joseph Zen said he was worried the anti-Christian campaign could spread to Hong Kong.

Participants left quietly after tying paper crosses to the gates of the liaison office in Western to call for religious freedom on the mainland.

The protest came the weekend that President Xi Jinping told mainland religious groups they had to align their values with the Communist Party and be "unyielding Marxist atheists".
