A former government psychiatrist says Hong Kong will face a dementia crisis as the population continues to age.

Dr Tsang Fan-kwong, who served in the public sector for more than two decades and is now in private practice, said an average of 20 percent of those aged around 80 suffer from the disease.

Dr Tsang said this percentage rises for people who are even older. He said the government is far from being prepared.

"Even now we don't have adequate people to take care of people suffering from dementia," he said. "Also, there is inadequate support for family members."

Dr Tsang said there doesn't appear to be any policy change on the horizon, even though the problem is growing.
