Hong Kong Airlines has cancelled its two scheduled flights for Monday, April 18 to and from Kumamoto following Saturday’s powerful earthquake.

The airline said on Sunday flight HX656, scheduled to depart at 10.45am on Monday for Kumamoto, would be cancelled.

Flight HX635, scheduled to depart the Japanese city for Hong Kong at 4pm has also been cancelled.

The airline said special arrangements are in place to waive the rebooking and rerouting charges for tickets issued on or before April 14 for travel to and from Kumamoto between April 14 and April 30.

Passengers are asked to contact the airline’s reservation hotlines 3916 3666 for Hong Kong, +86 950715 for mainland China and 00801 853033 in Taiwan, before travelling.

The airline launched its twice-weekly direct flight service to Kumamoto in December. The service also runs on Fridays.

The Hong Kong International Airport website shows an outbound travel alert for Kumamoto Prefecture was issued by the government on Saturday.

The Hong Kong government said on Sunday it had received no calls for assistance from Hong Kong residents due to the earthquake.

A government spokesman said: “Residents who plan to visit Kumamoto Prefecture or are already there should monitor the local situation, exercise caution, attend to personal safety, avoid travelling to earthquake affected areas and pay attention to advice of the local authorities, particularly on possible aftershocks.”

Those who need assistance while outside Hong Kong may call the 24-hour hotline of the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit of the Immigration Department at +852 1868 or contact the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in Japan. The embassy consular protection hotline is 81 334033064 and the Consulate-General in Fukuoka hotline is 81 9062989986.
