Joshua Wong says he has been refused a bank account for a new political party.
The founder of the now-defunct student group Scholarism said HSBC rejected his attempts at opening a second account of his own and a joint account with fellow former member Agnes Chow. The bank refused to comment on the case for privacy reasons. But Wong accused it of political censorship.
Meanwhile Wong said the party would push for a referendum on Hong Kong's fate after 2047, when the “One Country, Two Systems” principle expires. Chow said independence would be an option in the poll, but people could also opt to keep “One Country, Two Systems”.
Scholarism, which was at the forefront of two major social movements in recent years, confirmed it was disbanding last month.
Wong said a new, separate student body would be established within six months – using about half the funds donated to Scholarism.
The other half of the HK$1.5 million in donations would go into a trust fund to provide legal assistance to those affiliated with the group. None of the money would be used for the new political party.
