Pan-democratic lawmakers have questioned the increasing cost of fresh water being bought from Dongjiang River.

The Dongjiang River supplies about 70 to 80 percent of Hong Kong's fresh water.

Democratic Party lawmaker Sin Chung-kai said the price had increased 40 percent in six years, and was higher than the local inflation rate.

Civic Party lawmakers Claudia Mo and Dennis Kwok also criticised the price and quality of the water, and questioned why more wasn't being done locally to meet demand.

But DAB lawmaker Chan Kam-lam shot down the allegations, says those complaining about the rates can’t say where water can be more cheaper. He also dismissed concerns about the water quality.
