According to the mainland's Boxun news outlet, two Guangzhou residents have been sentenced to around four years in jail, while two others have been jailed for one-and-a-half years over their support for Hong Kong's pro-democracy Occupy movement.

Wang Mo, Xie Wenfei, Liang Qinhui and Zhang Rongping were found guilty of inciting subversion of state power.

Security was said to be extremely tightly outside the courthouse, and a number of activists who gathered outside to support the defendants were arrested.

Non-mainland media were also barred from covering the trial.

The Occupy Movement started in late 2014 demanding universal suffrage and lasted 79 days.
