A political scholar has warned against attempts to suppress debate about independence for Hong Kong after a pro-Beijing figure insisted that discussing the idea should not be allowed.
At RTHK’s City Forum on Sunday, a local deputy to China's legislature, Michael Tien, said debating the idea of Hong Kong breaking away from the mainland would bring the city to a dead-end and speed up the introduction of national security laws.
But Lingnan University political scholar, Li Pang-kwong, said it was not possible to stop people from talking about the suggestion.
He said that it would be wiser for those in power to deal with current governance issues instead, and resolve matters with proper reasoning rather than suppression.
