Baggio Leung talks to RTHK's Janice Wong
The convenor of Youngspiration, Baggio Leung, on Friday rejected a call for “internal self-determination” mooted by a group of young pro-democracy politicians and academics.
The declaration – signed by more than 30 people – issued on Thursday had said Hong Kong should have the right for "internal self-determination" after 2047, when the One Country, Two Systems principle is scheduled to end.
Governance of Hong Kong after the 50-year expiry of the handover agreement has become a hot political topic with some new parties calling for a referendum to be held on the issue and some even advocating outright independence for the territory.
The Civic Party's Tanya Chan was among those who signed the new declaration. She said that under this arrangement there would be no need to call for the territory's independence.
But Leung, who believes independence should be an option for Hong Kong people, did not sign the declaration. He told RTHK’s Janice Wong that “internal self-determination” is just another form of “One Country, Two Systems”.
Leung said that the principle has already been undermined after its implementation in 1997 and that is why independence should remain as an option to be chosen.
