The government is considering a new measure as it battles a rise in the number of people seeking asylum.

An assistant director of immigration, William Fung, says the department is considering implementing a pre-registration system to stem the inflow of asylum seekers.

Speaking on a television programme, he said the requirement would apply to countries where most of the asylum seekers come from.

Fung said people from those countries would have to apply to visit the city through an electronic platform.

Their applications will then be assessed before a decision is taken on whether to allow them in.

Fung pointed out that some countries also use a similar system for visitors from certain countries.
